This process of converting light into electrical energy is known as the photovoltaic effect, which was first observed by French physicist Alexandre Edmond Becquerel in 1839.

How Does Photovoltaic Technology Work?

Photovoltaic systems rely on solar cells, which are made of semiconductor materials like silicon. When sunlight hits these solar cells, it creates an electrical field that generates direct current (DC) electricity. The solar cells are arranged in panels, and multiple panels can be combined to form a larger photovoltaic system. This DC electricity is then converted into alternating current (AC) electricity by an inverter, making it suitable for powering homes, businesses, and even feeding into the electrical grid.

Components of a Photovoltaic System

A typical photovoltaic system consists of the following components: Solar panels (made up of solar cells) – These are the primary components that capture sunlight and convert it into electrical energy. Inverter – This device converts the DC electricity generated by the solar panels into AC electricity that can be used in homes and businesses. Racking system (to mount the solar panels) – This structure supports and positions the solar panels at an optimal angle to maximize sunlight exposure. Electrical wiring and connections – These components safely transmit the generated electricity from the solar panels to the inverter and then to the electrical panel or grid.
